Thank you for asking a question that comes to the minds of a many a Sikhs.
Please note that not only Sikhs but individuals from other faiths also wear turban. Rajput Hindus from Rajasthan, Muslims from Afghanistan etc. Most kings in India wore turban while sitting on their throne. Most Hindu grooms still wear turban at their weddings.
Turban is cultural. it is has been a very respectful part of the dress worldwide for long time.
Sikh Guru Sahibs developed Sikhs to be honest, dedicated, and respectful individuals and the turban became an integral part of the Sikh dress. Once again, it is cultural and nothing to do with spirituality. However, most will argue that spiritual people had long hair and some sort of head covering.
