Why don’t sikhs eat kosher or halal food? Although I have heard that some sikhs eat kosher but not halal and some say absolutely not. Which one and why?
As per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, eating meat has nothing to do with the Sikhi. The Guru, however, teaches that one should not eat that food, which harms the body and/or results in bad thoughts in the mind.
Okay. But all meat or just kosher and halal meat?
Are a lot of Sikhs vegetarian?
No such data available.
Why are you misguiding ppl. Guru Gobind Singh ji said that Halal meat is to be never Eaten
Where?
I dont have time. I would spend that time in something useful. If you are interested you can do your own research. If you want to eat halal meat you can do so and follow your own manmat.
What did the Panj Pyare tell you?
Please let me know your email address or your WhatsApp number and the undersigned will answer all your personal questions truthfully.
Gurbani very clearly says meat (ਮਾਸ) without any distinction.
Bhagat Kabir ji says in SGGS those who eat meat will goto hell !!!
Jhatka has been practiced as its puratan maryada of nihangs, via reciting Gurbani. No other meat is allowed for a Sikh. No walmart meat. No eating of beef as its a sin !
Okay so vegetarian. Where can I read this answer? (I have read a few pages of the Guru Granth Sahib and it seems similar to some muslim works actually (like Rumi). It’s very pretty).
Is it in the granth sahib or some sort of commentary?
This is for the person who wrote “Gurbani very clearly says meat (ਮਾਸ) without any distinction.”
Sorry I can’t read your name but I know that I have emailed you once or twice. (The only word in that alphabet that I can read is Ik Onkar. Hope that I don’t offend you).
Dear One, since I had your email address, I have sent you an email. Please have a look at your convenience.
I dint know what kosher is.
But never ever eat halal !!!! I mean never ever.
Kosher is the jewish food law. Pork, shellfish, worms, blood, cats, dogs, other human, etc are forbidden.
Halal is similar except shellfish is okay and I don”t know about worms as I’m not going to eat any. Also the food is blessed.
Muslims can eat kosher but Jews cannot eat halal because it is blessed.
I mean you no disrespect K Singh, but if you don’t know what kosher even means then I’m not so sure that you know about halal either.
I now explained what it means. Please respond when you have an understanding of what kosher and halal are because assumptions don’t help anyone.
I have seen some websites explain that Sikhs don’t eat halal because it’s blessed (like Jews) but you wrote that meat must be blessed by gurbani. Please explain.
Again, in no way do I wish to simply mess with you.
I have lived in Muslim countries.
Halal is forbidden by Guru Gobind Singh Ji very clearly. We dont eat this meat.
The four things that Sikhs dont do is:
1) Tobacco & alcohol / intoxicants
2) No meat. Although Jhatka is permissible. You can google what Jhatka is.
3) Cutting of hair
4) No adultery – which includes pornographt and mental imagination of woman not your wife. Basically no boyfriend / girlfriend of any type or sort.
On meat issue. Please dont listen to Sikhs who are misquoting and misimplementjng Gurbani.
Gurbani cannot be comprehended by intellectual mind and gyan. True Understanding of Gurbani comes by Guru,s grace only.
As far as the undersigned knows the Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh has nowhere forbidden meat. Please let the undersigned the source if you know it.
In Rehat Maryada, Halal is forbidden and Jhatka allowed. Why? No one knows because no reason is indicated. There is lot of controversy about it. Bhai Randhir Singh ji, who was one of the members of the Rehat Maryada committee didn’t attend the meeting in which jhatka meat eating was allowed. The undersigned is not interested in getting into this controversy.
As far as Gurbani is concerned, please read the Baani of the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib at Pannas 1289-1290 of Guru Granth Sahib. It is very clear that eating meat has nothing to do with the religion. At Panna 16 of Guru Granth Sahib, the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib makes it very clear that one should not eat that food, which doesn’t suit the body and/or results in bad thoughts in the mind.
As understood by the undersigned the position has been clarified above. Therefore, the undersigned is not interested in any further discussion on the subject.
I have a few questions for you:
1) Are you amritdhari? If not, the no need to comment on sikh topics. If yes, answer Q2 below.
2) What did Panj Pyare tell you about meat?
3) Do you agree with the Panj Pyare? If no, then I have no discussion with u.
Meat issue varies from samprada to samprada. But all Sikh Panth has accepted this fact that meat halal is forbidden. This is decision of AKAL TAKHT.
As for Jhatka meat this tradition among Nihangs and is your choice. No one criticizes this. Its a maryada established from the past and I see nothing wrong.
Please let me know your email address or your WhatsApp number and the undersigned will answer all your personal questions truthfully.
Thank you for the answer and thank you for the email.
My sincere apologies if I sounded argumentative. My intent wasn’t to frustrate anyone. If I frustrated you Kulvinder Sawhney or K Singh, please forgive me.
No problem at all. Hope you understood Guru Granth Sahib’s teaching about eating meat.
My apologies if I sounded too harsh or rude. I’m not trying to be argumentative. Being a Sikh in a Muslim country is probably difficult (depending on the specific country).
I read the pages for myself so it seems like an individual choice scenario.
Perhaps I should have explained in the beginning of my question that I am muslim, but like the ideals of sikhism. Perhaps this information would have helped for context. As a muslim I am required to eat halal but I was wondering mainly if I could follow some sikh principles (seva, equality, langar, meditation, etc) and if being muslim would make it impossible.
Understood. If you are here for learning we can discuss. But I don’t have time for lengthy debates and arguments.
Please watch this video on why we don’t eat halal: https://youtube.com/shorts/d08K953b1U8?si=QxBY9tKokNzKNiwc
It is in Punjabi, if you can understand. But basically Sikhs dont eat halal because it is a cruel method and the animal is basically alive and knows it will die, it is full of fear. Sikhs are compassionate and merciful and compassion / love is foremost. Henceforth, Halal which is a cruel method of killing the animal is not acceptable. Not just halal but any other type of meat which is not killed by Jhatka (one blow of sword) is unacceptable.
