Sikh means a seeker, student and Guru is a Spiritual Teacher. Guru Nanak observed that due to lack of spiritual knowledge people were directionless and priests for their own gains were exploiting them by preaching useless rituals, when he says “ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਇ ॥ Jag Dukhia Sukhia Jann Koe. Jag Rogi Bhogi Gun Roe” AGGS 431.The world is in agony; rarely someone is contented. The world is suffering spiritually because of indulgence and is yearning for spiritual wisdom. He found the cause of their sufferings and found remedy as well when he says “ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਭੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ॥ Houmai Diragh Rog Hai Darh Bhi Es Mahi” SGGS 466. Ego is a chronic disease, but it contains it is not incurable. “ਗਰੀਬੀ ਗਦਾ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥ Garibi Gadha Hamari” AGGS 628. Ego can be controlled by adopting humility.
