Respected Olawale Kolawale ji,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
In response to your question about ‘concept of contentment in Sikhism’, the undersigned wants to say that the Sikh seeks everything from Akalpurakh through Ardas.
The word Ardas appears in Guru Granth Sahib many times and is made from Persian word Arjdashat i.e. Arj + Dashat Arj means request (ਬੇਨਤੀ) and Dashat means to present (ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਾ).
As understood by the undersigned, Ardas is a request from a person/ Sikh to Akalpurakh in which he/ she shares happiness or sorrow with Him and seeks His blessings for remaining in Chardi Kala!
At Panna 103 of Guru Granth Sahib, the Fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjan Sahib says: ‘ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ which means that Akalpurakh is my father, mother, every relation and protector everywhere.
Now coming to the question, as to whether should a Sikh seek worldly things from Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other, in the Ardas?
At Panna 481 of Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Sahib raises the same question as what should I seek from Akalpurakh, when nothing is permanent:-
In the following stanza Guru Sahib teaches us that the child, whose protector is Akalpurakh, has no hunger/greed for worldly things, though Akalpurakh has given an open sanction that the child should be given, whatever he seeks. The child, however, seeks knowledge (ਦਰਸ਼ਨ – ਗਿਆਨ) to remain one with Akalpurakh:-
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਭੂਖ ਕੈਸੀ ॥ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਾਂਛੈ ਸੋ ਲੈਸੀ ॥੩॥ ਪਿਤਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਇਹ ਦੀਨੀ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਸੋ ਦੇਨਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਾਹੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਚਰਨਾ ॥੪॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1266}
Further, at Panna 959 of Guru Granth Sahib, Fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjun Sahib, guides us:-
ਮਃ ੫ ॥ ਵਿਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਕੈ ਦੁਖ ॥ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਉਤਰੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਵਣੁ ਤਿਣੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਕੀਤਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਆ ਮਨੁਖ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 958}
So, Guru Sahib is guiding us that instead of seeking worldly riches, one should seek contentment (so that no hunger/greed is left for worldly things) in the Ardas.
Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.
Regards,
Your Brother
Punjabi word for contentment is SANTOLH. GURU says BINA SANTOKH NAHEE KOU RAJE. SANTOKH means non attachment to material world, being happy and stable with what we have, not craving for more. When my peace, happiness is never dependent on material world , i am in SANTOKH state of mind. GURU says work hard, earn through ethical means but be happy with what you have.
Contentment means to be stable in every situation. Our life is how we perceive it. It is the stability of mind even in adverse situations that makes our life stable and contented.
