My wife and I like to meditate and pray together but we have a two and a half year old hyperactive son who is not letting us concentrate and read Gurbani appropriately. He also wakes up as early as we do. What advice can you give us?

Do your duty towards your young one, with all your dedication, because Akalpurakh has given him to you both, for doing sewa in your home. You are answerable to Akalpurakh, if you don’t do your duty properly.
Even when that means skipping meditation and prayer? I thought that meditation and prayer were more important, as they usually fill me up with virtues to go ahead and do Seva…
As understood by the undersigned, Nishkam Sewa of His gift , given to you both by Akalpurakh in your home, with utmost care and dedication, is no less virtuous . Seeing Akalpurakh in him and giving values to him is no less meditation.
You can continue your meditation whenever you get time but doing Nishkam Sewa of God’s gift to you is no less important.
Thank you Brother. We were trying to pray and ignore him at the same time. But the more we ignored him the worst he would get. We were losing our peace and patience that way. I guess another option is to pray independently so that one if us is watching over him while the other prays. What do you think?
Possibly, you can try that. No harm in trying. Also, try, if he also joins you both.
Of course, first thing we tried was for him to join us. We were reading Gurbani and praying in his room so that he could just play quietly or join us. But he would just get crazy trying to call our attention anytime we started to go deep into meditation or prayer.
Keep on trying. Please understand that he is Akalpurakh’s child gifted to you for Nishkam Sewa in your home and it is your utmost duty to bring him up well while doing your meditation and other worldly duties with dedication.
Please listen to this Shabad, which is located at Panna 103 of Guru Granth Sahib:-
Regards,
Your Brother
Great Brother. I will play that outloud through the speakers, for my family to hear it.
I’ll keep on trying Brother. We understand our son is important, we are not going to abandon him or anything. It’s just that we thought that for approximately 20 minutes during morning and evening prayers we were supposed to give Akal Purakh priority. Our judeo-christian experience always tought us that the first and most important commandment is to love God above anything else. That’s why we were confused about those moments of meditation and prayer.
