Kirandeep Kaur Ji Sikhism is not a religion. Guru Nanak was way beyond organized religion when he was asked in Mecca by the Qazi (Moslem priest) whether Hinduism or Islam is the greater religion. The Guru replied that neither one is greater because it is your deeds which make you great. It was for the first time when someone talked of interfaith relations and stood above religious practices for unity and peace in the world. Guru Nanak wanted to create a Sachiar (Truthful person).
In Sukhmani Sahib Guru Arjan says
AGGS 266
Sarab Dharam Meh Sresat Dharam || Har Ko Naam Jap Niramal Karam ||
Of all religions (Dharam), the best religion (Dharam) is to maintain pure conduct according to the Virtues of the God. Because there are different religions so Guru is giving definition of Dharam in all religions including Sikhs as “Pure Conduct”, which is same in all religions.
So Sikhism is neither an ethnic nor a universal religion BUT a message for entire humanity how to live a truthful life.
Thank you
