I pray and do all that God gives me something that I truly desire. Would I get it?

That’s very good question. Guru says:
AGGS 321
Mangana T Sach Ek Jis Tus Devai Aap || Jit Khadhai Mann Tripatiai Nanak Sahib Daat ||2||
If one begs, then one should beg for the (Naam) Virtues of the God. Only those get the (Naam) Virtues of the God who adopt and assimilate (Eating this gift) these Virtues, their mind (Mann) get contented and satisfied from worldly passions (Maya). Nanak says this is the True Boon of the God.
AGGS 962
Prabh Chod Hor J Mangana Sabh Bikhia Ras Char ||
To forsake Virtues of the God, and ask for desires of worldly passions (Maya) is corrupt and useless like ashes.
Worldly temptations are never fulfilled. After one, another crops up. One never gets contentment in the world. The only way to fulfill the worldly temptations is to control them by adopting and assimilating the Virtues of the God with their consciousness. Ardas should be to arouse divine love in the heart, so that we can get knowledge and wisdom to live a perfect truthful life. For worldly desires to be fulfilled we have to work ourselves, but Ardas helps us psychologically that God is with us now. Listen to my you tube for more info.

We pray to lower our ego so that we are ready to listen to the teachings of Gurbani written in Guru Granth Sahib.
We will get depending upon our deeds at physical and mental level. That will be decided by His Hukam and Razaa and not our demands.
