Science believes that life originated in water. The first cell was formed in water from the reaction of some gases in the atmosphere under the effect of lightning. From this single cell, the whole biological world has evolved. Here is a reference from Gurbani.

      ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
From the True Lord came the air, and from the air came water.

      ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਇ ॥
From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light.

This is an important question and must be answered on facts. In PAUREE 21 of BANI JAP GURU NANAK raised important question. What was the day, month or season when the universe came into existence.? NANAK then states that the MUSLIM, HINDU RELIGIOUS LEADERS did not know. The enlightened YOGIS did not know either. Then GURU says JA KARTA SIRTHI KO SAJAI APAI JANAI SOEE (PAGE 19) meaning only creator knows, nobody else. Further in PAUREE 22 NANAK says nobody knows how vast is the universe.
It is completely wrong to say that GURU NANAK described how and when universe came into existence. GURU NANAK was not a scientist , he was spiritual enlightener.
Some Sikh Scholars quote SHABAD, SACHE TE PAWNA BHAEAA, PAWNE TE JALL HOAI (PAGE 19) literally translated , from the true lord came air and then from air came water and so on. When we closely examine this SHABAD it is all about spiritual awakening, not about creation. Spiritually NANAK says THE SHABAD, UNIVERSAL LIFE ENERGY existed before anything else. THE UNIVERSAL LIFE ENRGY MANIFESTED IN THE FORM OF UNIVERSE. GURU NANAK talks about spiritual angle not scientific basis. Again I say it is mistake to say GURU NANAK described scientific process.

Japuji Sahib a very concise Granth gives answers to all questions very briefly.

Genesis is explained in Japu Bani as follows :

      ।।ਕੀਤਾ ਪਸਾਉ ਏਕੋ ਕਵਾਓ।।
      ।।ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਓ।।

Universe was created with A big bang.
Thereafter lakhs of ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਗੰਗਾ or galaxies sprouted.

      ਮ॰1, 563

First of all ੴ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ manifested Itself,
and established the Laws of Nature.

Secondly, Kudrat was manifested, (to evolve automatically as per the Laws of Nature), ……..
….. and Ekencar amalgamated itself in each and every atom*, and is rejoicing the unfolding of the Cosmos placidly.

Genesis and it’s relationship with humans is a long and complex subject for which i can be contacted at 《[email protected]》

In very simlple language Sikhi believe in the scientific BIG BANG theory of the creation of the universe.

AARBAD NERBAD DHUUNDU KARAA II ANK 1035-36
DHARN NA GAGNA HUKAM AAPARA II
NA DIN RAIN NA CHAND NA SURAJ SUUN SMADH LAGAIDA II

For endless time there was utter darkness. There was no earth or sky. There was infinite Hukm (command) of God. There was no day or night, no sun or moon, 1ਓ was in primal (Nirgun) state

Please read this entire Shabad for more information
