In reply to your question, the undersigned wants you to read the following Pangti of Shabad of Fifth Guru Person Guru Arjun Sahib in Raag Maru, which is located at Panna 1083-84 of Guru Granth Sahib:-
ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1084}
In this Guru Sahib is teaching us that one is not to disturb the Saroop given by Akalpurakh to us. Rather, keeping it as it is a way to get respect. Therefore, you have to first get convinced that you will have to be in Akalpurakh’s Hukam and maintain Sikhi Saroop.
Now we come to the question, what is Amrit?
Amrit is Ambrosia/Nectar/Elixir of life, by taking which a person never dies and becomes immortal. Immortality is generally linked with physical death, which as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib has to happen. The Guru teaches us that ‘ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ।। ।’ The Guru, however, teaches us to rise above the fright of physical death.
Please be kind to read the following stanza from a Shabad of Kabir ji at Panna 654 of Guru Granth Sahib in which he is guiding us to rise above the fright of death:-
ਪਰਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਜਗ ਊਪਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 654}
The Sikh, who is a student, by imbibing the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, has to rise above the fright of death and become Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Perhaps, you would be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word, which means King’s own land.
Once the Sikh become Akalpurakh’s own then Akalpurakh will always be with him and he will not do anything which will lead to his Spiritual Death. In a way, the Sikh has to live a disciplined life, as per the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib. So, as understood by the undersigned, as per the Gurbani, this is what immortality is. This is what the Sahibzadas and other martyrs achieved by laying down their lives but by not dying spiritual death and, therefore, became immortal for all times to come (ਅਮਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ).
The word Amrit appears in Guru Granth Sahib a large number of times, which makes it absolutely clear that Shabad/Naam (Gurbani) is Amrit. For example, Guru Sahib guides us;-
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥੪੧॥੯੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 393}
Actually, what we take from Panj Piaras is not Amrit but ‘Pahul’, which in common parlance is named as ‘Amrit’ and the ceremony is named as ‘Amrit Sanskar’. Please see pages 27 to 31 of ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’, under the heading ‘Amrit Sanskar’, which are devoted to the ceremony of taking Pahul. Now coming to the question why it is necessary to take Pahul?
The practice of giving Pahul was started by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib on the Vaisakhi day of 1699 to prepare a disciplined force of ‘Sant Sipahis (ਸੰਤ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ)’, so as to fight against all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty.This disciplined force of Sant Sipahis came to be known as Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own, who rose above the fright of death and fought all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty in the past and continue to do so.
Hope the above explanation will help you to take a decision about taking Pahul and becoming a Sant Sipahi.
If you have any further questions, please do ask. If there are any shortcomings please do point out the same for improvement in future.
Regards,
Your Brother
I took Amrit long time ago for political reasons because I thought I needed to be in my uniform to fight Gurdwara management politics. I don’t have any regrets because it’s all in IkOnkar Hukam, some people have look down on me because of my behaviour. i now firmly believe in 3 things. IkOnkar SatGur Parsad. IkOnkar humanity. IkOnkar Hukam. Please don’t take Amrit if you have any hesitation, it’s all okay, at least you are thinking about taking Amrit, most people don’t even think about taking Amrit so you are doing better than a lot of people. I would ask you to do Ardas in your own words why you would like to take Amrit and just talk it out with yourself. And when you are 100% ready then take Amrit. 5 Ks is our uniform so people know that this person who has taken Amrit is ready to fight oppression against government and bullies. Naam Japo keeps you focused on this difficult mission. IkOnkar SatGur Parsad Hukam blessings to you and your family and friends and all humanity, take care.
