The undersigned is of the opinion that this can be possible but the emotions, which can be portrayed by reading Shabads of Guru Granth Sahib in Gurmukhi can’t be possible by reading the same in other languages.
Great question.
Obviously there’s no direct Gurbani quote that directly responds to this question. So my take on this is purely my opinion (which may not be agreeable to all).
To start with we observe that Shri Guru Granth Sahib has shabads composed in different languages (of course written in Gurmukhi Script). Secondly, the purpose of reading Gurbani is to comprehend the message and then apply it in our daily lives.
Now most of us who are proficient in Punjabi, may sometimes fail to fully understand Gurbani verses because of the various original languages those verses were written in. That’s why several translations exist in different languages.
So I guess performing ceremonies in different language is perfectly alright. Afterall without comprehending what we are reading basically amounts to be a mere ritual which Gurbani strongly rejects.
Hopefully this partially answers your question.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
The original is original and a translation is no match to it however good it may be . A translation brings some thought and interpretation of the translator which may or may not be the thought or the longing ad expressed by the Guru. As such only the original is our Guru which should be installed in a Gurudwara. Translation only serves a limited purpose.
