WKWF. Guru Granth Sahib ji is written in poetic format having its own unique grammar and most importantly every sentance is tightly woven to avoid any edits at any given time. It’s shall be great if you could share the page #. Can explain you in detail regarding this particular numbering.. glad you asked this many have queries but very few ask. Gurfateh

This is the number system. When Dhan Dhan Guru Arjan Sahib Ji edited SGGS, he arranged all the Shabad in one order. Every Shabad ends with its number written. It has a running sequence total and also grand total. This is because no one can adulterate Dhan Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji even if he wants to. It is very important to understand this too Veer Ji.

I would like to add to above explanation. In each RAAG first SHABADS are of GURU NANAK ,THEN GURU ANGAD , SO ON TO NINTH GURU,THEN BHAGAT BANI BEGINNING WITH BHAGAT KABIR AND SO ON. Your question is on SHABAD FRON RAAG GAURI (PAGE 335 SGGS). At the end of first SHABAD BY NANAK, RAAG GAURI written number 3, 1. that mean this SHABAD has three STANZAS and is SHABAD number 1. On page 157 after the SHABAD number is 4,1,20 mean this SHABAD has four STANZAS, THIS IS SHABAD NUMBER 20 of GURU NANAK IN RAAG GAURI. Number i mean this is SHABAD NUMBER 1 OF SUB RAAG GUARI POORBI DEEPAKI and there are 19 other SHABADS OF RAAG AGURI. Coming to your question number4,1,4,55 mean this SHABAD HAS FOUR STANZAS, SHABAD NUMBER 4 of sub RAAG GAURI POORBI BY BHAGAT KABIR AND 55TH SHABAD OF KABIRJI IN BANI GAURI KABIRJI. I am not able to explain what number 1 mean. I need to do more research. GURUARJUNJI had developed a wonderful lock up, sequencing system when compiling SGGAJI.
