This SLOK from ASA DEE VAR is composed by GURU ANGAD SAHIB. Its spiritual message, I believe has profound implications in the world society today because HAMAI is the single biggest obstacle in realizing inner peace, happiness and world peace. Here is how I understand the spiritual message.
HAUMAI EHA JAAT HAI HAUMAI KARAM KAMAHE (SGGS PAGE 466).
HAUMAI – It is important to understand that Haumai does not mean self-pride (Hankar). Haumai is Ego, which is identification with the mind and body to create a self-identity, a Me, that is separate from the ONENESS and all of creation.
EHA JAAT- the nature or characteristic of ego
HAUMAI KARAM KAMAHE – to continue egoistic behavior patterns to maintain self-image, duality perspective of life
GURU says it is the nature of Ego to reinforce itself. It is the nature of the individuation life perspective to remain entangled in behavior patterns and habits that preserve self-image and separation from reality (duality). The ego-identified human will do everything to feed self-identity at any cost.
HAUMAI AIEE BANDHNA PHIR PHIR JONEE PAHE.
PHIR PHIR- again and again, long time.
JONEE PAHE- face spiritual death every day and suffer pain, worries, anxiety.
GURU says the individual self is shackled in duality behavior and habits and does everything to preserve self-image. GURU says this life perspective gives the individual stress, depression, worries and anxiety. One faces spiritual death every day. In above two verses GURU describes how ego, individual self is a chronic disease and causes mankind to suffer in pain.
HAUMAI KITHON OOPJAI KIT SANJAM EH JAAI.
GURU raises an important question: how does the duality, individual self, separation from TRUTH, GOD become part of human life perspective? How can this be eradicated and dispelled?
HAUMAI EHO HUKAM HAI PAEEAI KIRAT PHIRAHE.
GURU says first we need to understand how ego becomes part of our daily life. The answer to this question can be found in the text of SGGSJI.
In BANI SIDH GHOAST the JOGIS (ACETICS) asked GURU NANAK a very important question.
KIT KIT BIDH JAG OOPJAI PURKHA KIT KIT DUKH WINAS JAEE. How is the world life drama being played, how is humanity being shackled in insanity, pain and misery? GURU explained, HAUMAI WICH JAG OOPJAI PURKHA NAAM WISRIAI DUKH PAEE (SGGS PAGE 946). GURU also says EH JAG JANMIA DOOJAI BHAAI (SGGS PAGE 161) meaning the whole world is born into the ego environment. GURU is explaining that HAUMAI is a natural part of society; it came into existence as part of manifestation. GURU says JEH AAP RACHIO PARPANCH AKAAR. HAUMAI MOH BHARAM BHAI BHAR ( SGGS PAGE 291 PAD SEVEN ASHPADI TWENTY ONE BANI SUKHMANI) meaning when formless ( NIRGUN) IK ONKAR manifested in form, the universe (SIRGUN) then HAUMAI, FEAR, FALSEHOOD ,ATTACHMENT became part of the nature. Taken together with the above verses HAUMAI EHO HUKAM HAI PAEEAI KIRAT PHIRAHE, we understand that duality, self-image is a natural, will of GOD phenomena that is part of the play of life. This is a law of nature and the will of GOD. Ego consciousness in the world came into being through sense of individuation, or manifestation of the ONE into individual beings. We must understand and accept that HAUMAI is part of the play or game of life. But GURU explains that there is a better way to play the game of life that ends suffering and keeps us in bliss.
GURU says there exist two possibilities in the world, ego, duality and ONENESS, DIVINITY. Ego possibility is formed through family, societal and institutional influences. When we chose ego, individual self- possibility, we create separation from divinity, SHABAD GURU, TRUTH. We suffer stress, depression, worry, anxiety and mental health problems. As society we claim marvelous successes in every field but we are losing our soul.
GURU says HAUMAI DEERAG ROGU HAI meaning the ego, self- identity is a chronic disease. This disease of human mind, I AM is the biggest obstacle in transformation from duality perspective of life to GURU, ONENESS, DIVINITY perspective of life. Ego does not want to change, self-preservation at any cost is the character of HAUMAI. Collective religious ego has killed millions of innocent people. Collective ego of state can cause wars and destruction. Ego is never satisfied with what you have. Craving for more is a never-ending disease. Gap between what you have and what you desire is never filled. Corporate greed in the modern-day society is exploiting common citizens for larger profits. Selfishness, hatred, jealousy and vanity is the real face of HAUMAI. Egoistic mind is never your friend, does not care for your pain and suffering. Self-doubt and fear are the biggest weaknesses of HAUMAI. After discussing the negative characters of HAUMAI. GURU says DAROO BHI ISS MAHE meaning the spiritual medicine to eradicate HAUMAI lies in recognizing and understanding the face of HAUMAI. GURU says HAUMAI is an illusion, not real. It only survives as long we continue feeding it.

Transcend HAUMAI. First step is to recognize that I have had enough of this miserable, unhappy life and that there is another way of living the life, the way of ONENESS, WISDOM OF THE GURU. Unfortunately, most people are not even aware there is DIVINE perspective of life. There are others who only know the egoistic perspective of life. NANAK says HUKAM RAJAEE CHALNNA (SGGS PAGE 1) meaning living the wisdom of GURU is the solution. This means to drop the egoistic perspective of life, dropping the attachment to mind, the individual self, transcending the HAUMAI. GURU says PEHLA MARAN KABOOL JIWAN KEE CHHAD AAS meaning I need to delete I AM, SEPARATE SELF-IMAGE. Give your head to GURU. GURU says when I AM disappears what is left is YOU, THE SPIRIT OF ENLIGHTENMENT. This is what is meant by GUR KA SHABAD KAMAHE. Complete conscious transformation. NANAK HUKAMAI JE BHOOJE TA HAUMAI KAHE NA KOAI meaning when I realize THE ONENESS, the HAUMAI perspective of life disappears. NANAK KAHE SUNHO JANHO IT SANJAM DUKH JAAI meaning deleting I AM and become one with THE ONENESS is the way to inner peace and bliss. This is the way to play the game of life successfully.
