      That’s very important question Amrit Pal Singh Ji. Guru says
      ਹੰਉਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖੜਕੁ ਹੈ ਖੜਕੇ ਖੜਕਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ ਹੰਉਮੈ ਵਡਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ AGGS 592
      Haoumai Andar Kharrak Hai Kharrake Kharrak Vihae || Houmai Vada Rog Hai Mar Janmai Avai Jae ||
      ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
      Jin Kao Poorab Likhia Tina Satgur Milia Prabh Aye || Nanak Gur Parasadi Obare Houmai Sabad Jalae ||2||
      Guru replies the above question that in egotism, one is troubled by mental peace and passes life in turmoil. Egotism is such a terrible disease that one spiritually die and reborn over and over again. Nanak says those who seek for the True Guru and get spiritual knowledge and wisdom eradicate ego.
      ਗਰੀਬੀ ਗਦਾ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥ AGGS 628
      Garibi Gadha Hamari ||
      Humility (Garibi) is my spiked club to control egotism.
      Most of our problems are because of our ego and humility (Garibi) is the weapon to control it.
      The material conception of life enables us to find fault in others, by ignoring our own. True humility is recognition of one’s own imperfections. Humility does not mean one should not assert one’s rights and let others walk all over you. Humility teaches equality, not manipulation.

      to eliminate ego we have to rise from body conscious to soul conscious It means we have to recognise our identity maan tu joy swaroop hai In this way we break from attachments to the worldly thinks including our own body This ego creates the attachment and attachment brings pain So in breaking our attachment breaks our ego and there is only you Sab Gobind hai sab Gobind hai

      ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਭੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਜਨਹੁ ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ ੪੬੬}

      ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਮਝਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਇਕ ਲੰਮਾ ਰੋਗ ਹੈ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਲਾ-ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।, ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਲਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਮਝਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਨਾਲ, ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਉਪਰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ, ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੂਪੀ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

      Every body wants to have free will. All our personal problems and difference of opinion with others are because of our Ego only. Gurmat teaches us to have the opinion according to the system of Akal Purkh which has got minimum clashes.
      ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੇਹਿ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥- 288
      Once we start understanding and following the Hukam of Akal Purkh with the help of Shabad Guru, then all our problems get reduced.
