Respected Brother/Sister,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
In response to your question the undersigned wants to say that as per Shabadkosh, meditation means As understood by the undersigned, meditation is a means of transforming the mind.
In Sikhism, Gurbani teaches us to meditate on the Guru Shabad (ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ) and become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are embodiment of each other, because only that person is a successful meditator (ਭਗਤ, ਧਿਆਨੀ, ਤਪੀ, ਅਭਿਆਸੀ), who becomes capable of achieving the benevolence of Akalpurakh.
In Sikhism, the purpose of meditation i.e. becoming one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are embodiment of each other, is to achieve the stage of spiritual equipoise (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and spiritual bliss (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ) and finally spiritual emancipation/salvation in this life itself.
ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਮਿਟੇ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬੧॥੧੩੦॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 192}
ਗਹੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਮਲ ਚਰਨ ਅਵਰ ਆਸ ਕਛੁ ਪਟਲੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਤਪਾ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੩॥੧॥੨੯॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 678}
The undersigned is not aware about practices of meditation in Buddhism, but as found from the internet, the closest words for meditation in the classical languages of Buddhism are bhāvanā (mental development) and jhāna/dhyāna
(mental training resulting in a calm and luminous mind). Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things.
On comparison, one can, possibly, come to a conclusion that the aim of meditation in both the religions is to achieve spiritual equipoise and spiritual bliss.
However, there is big difference between the two religions because Buddhism believes in reincarnation after death whereas Sikhism doesn’t believe in reincarnation after death and a Sikh can achieve spiritual emancipation/salvation in this life itself.
Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.
Regards,
Your Brother
