It is commonly said the word SIKH come from Sanskrit and it means a student.
As per Gurbani, A Sikh is defined as follows:
ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

ਫਿਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥(ਮ:੪, ਪੰ:੩੦੫)
(The one who calls himself a Sikh, gets up in the morning and contemplates on the virtues of ੴ.
A little further, it goes on to state, then during the day, while doing his chores, continue to contemplate on the virtues of ੴ ).
