Being born in America, i wasn’t brought up and taught punjabi. Do i need to be fluent in Punjabi to be closer to Waheguru?

      No. You need to have love for the creator and the creation of the creator. Love is the divine language. With the love in the heart, you can get closer to Waheguru.Divine love is called Prema Bhakti which means loving devotion for the creator. Here is a reference from Shri Guru Granth Sahib with the meaning.
      ਤੇਰਿਆ ਭਗਤਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਦ ਤੇਰੀਆ
      Your devotees are forever hungry for You.
      ਹਰਿ ਲੋਚਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਮੇਰੀਆ
      O Lord, please fulfill my desires.
      ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਿਆ ਮੈ ਗਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ
      Grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, O Giver of Peace. Please, take me into Your Embrace.

      ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ
      The Gurmukhs embrace the Love of the Lord in their minds; they are continually occupied with the Lord’s Name.

      Hey. Sikh born and bred in the UK here. We have a huge punjabi community here so im lucky enough to speak and read punjabi. But no i dont believe it is essential to be able to speak punjabi to be closer to Waheguru. Most times, when i read about Sikhi, it is in English so that i can understand it better. As long as your heart is clean …. thats all that matters.
