Pilgrimages have no place in Gurmat.Visits to historical places remind us of goodness and tradition. The futility of pilgrimage to the sacred places is amply illustrated by the life of Guru Amardas. Before he became Guru, he went on pilgrimages twenty times, without benefit. He saw the light only when he finally met Guru Angad. In Darbar Sahib Amritsar, people take bath in Sarovar, especially at Dukh Bhanjani Beri. They think that the Beri (tree) would wash away their sins and they will go to heaven. But Guru says
AGGS 687
Tirath Navaṇ Jao Tirath Nam Hai || Tirath Sabaḏ Bichar Antar Giyan Hai ||
Gur Giyan Sacha Than Tirath Das Purab Sada Dasahra || Hao Nam Har Ka Sada Jachao Deh Parabh Dharnidhara ||
Why should I bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage? Virtues of the God (Naam), is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. My sacred shrine of pilgrimage is contemplating the spiritual knowledge and wisdom (Shabd) of the Guru and imbibing it within my mind (Mann). The spiritual wisdom given by the Guru is the True sacred shrine of pilgrimage, where the ten festivals are always observed. I constantly beg for the Name of the God (Virtues); grant it to me, O God, Sustainer of the world.
