In my perspective, the ultimate goal of a Sikh is to understand who he/she is (self-realization) and the connection with the universe. A Sikh needs to imbibe the wisdom of Guru Sahib and keep uplifting and evolving himself or herself to the point of perfection. The life of a Sikh is an experience and a Sikh needs to keep learning from his or her experiences and keep contributing good deeds to the universe.
In response to your question, ‘What is the ultimate goal of a Sikh’, as understood by the undersigned, a Sikh has to become a righteous (ਸਚਿਆਰ) person and become one with Akalpurakh/Guru. In Sikhism Akalpurakh and Guru are embodiment of each other.
The goal of becoming a righteous (ਸਚਿਆਰ) person was laid down by the First Guru Person Guru Nanak Sahib, in the first Pauri of Jap Baani itself, when he said:-
According to Prof. Sahib Singh, (who had done the vyakhya of entire Guru Granth Sahib), the entire Guru Granth Sahib is explanation of these Pangtis.
Once a Sikh achieves the goal of becoming a righteous (ਸਚਿਆਰ) person, he will become one with Akalpurakh/Guru. He will live a disciplined life and get rid of vices and achieve emancipation/salvation in this life itself (ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ) since there is no concept of salvation/ emancipation, after death in Sikhism.
Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.
