Hello sikh scholars,
Im learning about Sikhi right now and I came across verses that confused me. Gurbani says that people are created out of “blood and sperm”.
“This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.” (Ang 63)
“Through the union of mother and father, the fetus is formed. The blood and sperm join together to make the body.” (Ang 1013)
In the last verse, some translate this as “egg and sperm” not “blood and sperm”. I dont know which translation is true.
What does “blood” mean here? How is a person created out of a woman’s blood? Or is this just about the female egg? Why then using the word “blood”?
Greeting and God bless
Respected Jamie, this is so simple to understand. We know that life begins with union of sperm of a male and an egg of a female leading to formation of fetus. Further development of fetus take place in female’s body by taking nourishment through blood by intra-attached umbilical cord. We should try to understand the main message given to me i.e how I should get rid of vices, assimilate godly virtues in my inner personality and live a blissful life by practising those virtues in my everyday life. Hope this will help you. Your queries are welcomed.
regards,
Dear Karnail Singh, thank you for your answer. However, arent the blood circulation of the mother and the child seperated? Im not an expert but as far as I know the blood from the mother and the blood from the child are seperated through the placenta. So the blood isnt really “forming” the child, right? Or am I reading this too literal?
Regards
Respected Jamie, Gurbani in Guru Granth Saheb has been written in poetic form organised in musical notes (ragas). Guru Saheb has used metaphor/ simile from history/ mythology/ everyday life to make it easy to understand the central idea. Main focus is to groom my mind or to teach me the art of living a blissful life by getting rid of vices and assimilating godly virtues in my inner personality. A learner is to focus on that.
I will suggest you to read Guru Granth Saheb in your language from the link given :

Biologically, an embroy receive it’s feed for further development through umbilical cord which is intra attached to embroy and placenta to facilitate blood circulation to feed and other metabolic functions. I again advise you to keep your focus on the virtues to be assimilated and vices to be got rid of for development of my inner personality. Further queries are welcomed.
