Is there a simple way to know if Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is on the altar in the main hall (Darbar Sahib) or safely kept in another room (sukhasan)? I visited a Gurdwara at 11.00 am once. The Gurdwara was open, but Darbar Sahib was empty, so I hesitated to bow (matha tek) not knowing if Guruji was present yet. I avoid going to Gurdwara on weekdays as I can't tell if Guruji is there.

If you are in India then Guru Granth Sahib will be there, even if there is no one in the hall of Gurdwara Sahib. If you are abroad then you will have to check with Bhai Sahib or Sewadar of the Gurdwara Sahib.
