In response to your question the undersigned wants to say that there are many Shabads in Guru Granth Sahib, related to your question, about seeking material possessions by human beings, which are impermanent.
The following Pauri, however, directly answers your question about reason for seeking impermanent material possessions, by human beings:-
ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮੰਗੈ ਸੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਕਰਤਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਕੈਸੀ ਭੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥
ਅਰਥ: (ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੇ ਚਾਉ-ਮਲ੍ਹਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਆਪਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
(ਹਾਂ,) ਜਿਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ (ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ) ।੪।
You can very well see that Guru Sahib is guiding us that the person, whose mind is attached with the material world, seeks happiness all the time, but remains unhappy, every now and then, till he gets rid of vices, becomes righteous/virtuous person (ਸਚਿਆਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ) and becomes one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other. Once he succeeds and reaches this stage then he is able to achieve the higher spiritual stage (ਉਚੀ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ) of spiritual equipoise (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and spiritual bliss (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ). At this stage one doesn’t seek happiness because he doesn’t find any difference between happiness and sorrow (ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਗਮੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ). The final goal is to achieve spiritual emancipation/ salvation in this life itself (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ).

ਮੂੰਹ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਭਾਵ, ਗੱਲਾ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੰਨ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੇ, ਅੱਖਾਂ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੀਆਂ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਇੰਦਰੇ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਾਹਕ ਹਨ, ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਾਹਕੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਏ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਹਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਮਝਾਇਆਂ ਭੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਮਿਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਮਨੂੱਖ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ।੨।
ਮਨੂੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਜੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਬੁੱਝ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।੧੯।
