Normally, such items are burnt but in the undersigned’s opinion, a better way to dispose off the same, without creating pollution, is to put them in water and crush them. The residue can be conveniently used to make paper toys, provided one has an open mind.
Though for the time being, as Kulwinder said, it probably is a good idea to burn, in case you don’t have access to gurdwara sahib. Generally one can take all these religious artifacts to the gurdwara sahib if you are in Punjab, and they help you with it. This is a common problem and I think we should have a better solution than just burning them though.
Also i was thinking of starting a project on the lines of : https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/2206946/how-to-properly-dispose-of-worn-out-us-flags/ through which US flags are disposed off! Anybody interested in helping me out to brainstorm!
