Thank you for asking very pertinent question.
There is no mention of AKHAND PATH in Guru Granth Sahib ji.
As best as I can find out, the AKHAND PAATH ritual started by Sikhs after the Guru Period. Some claim it was started by the Sikhs hiding in Jungles from the Mogul governments. It is very unlikely that the Sikh hiding in jungles when they had no idea how long they m would start a ritual, specially to condition of “AKHAND”, taking no breaks. There is no motivation for that condition.
However, the controllers of the Gurduaras, to find ways to make money from the gulible (un-aware) Sangat, had every reason to start the rituals. So, as best as I know, that is the root of the start of the AKHAND PATH ritual. And it probably happened at the historic Sikh Gurduaras that were low on funds after the Banda Bahadur period.
Even today, Gurduaras, including Darbar Sahib Amritsar, has a line of AKHAND PAATH going on in the same room and all at time and the funds are pouring in from all over the world. A great money-making scheme for the Gurduara Managements and the Bhai Sahibs, (the Sikh clergy).
