Singh means a lion.
The word Singh is Punjabi word, It is the same word in Hindi e.g. SINGHASAN, the throne ( of the lion). The roots are in Sanskrit word SINH.
ਸਿੰਘੁ ਬੁਕੇ ਮਿਰਗਾਵਲੀ ਭੰਨੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਧੀਰਿ ਧਰੋਆ।
Bhai Gurdaas Ji has used the word Singh in his Vaar for lion. Hence this word must have been in Punjabi language since long.
