      Respected Ajuni Kaur ji,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

In reply to your question, the undersigned first wants to clarify about repetition of the word ‘Waheguru (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ)’, which Sikhs call Naam Simran (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ).

The word ‘Waheguru: actually is combination of two words:-

‘Wahe (ਵਾਹਿ)’ means that the Akalpurakh is worth praising (ਭਾਵ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸਤਤ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਹੈ); and

      ‘Guru (ਗੁਰੂ)’ means that the Akalpurakh provides knowledge, in the darkness of ignorance (ਭਾਵ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਰੂਪੀ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਬਖਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ).

Therefore, as understood by the undersigned, the Naam Simran is to imbibe the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and change one’s life. It is not sitting in a dark room and repeating the word ‘Waheguru’ for a limited time because the Guru teaches to become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other and do simran in every breath. Please read the following stanza from Baani Sukhmani Sahib:-

      ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੇਖੁ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਚਿੰਦ ॥ ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਤਰੰਗ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਗ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਹੁ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਹੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 295}

      ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਸੁਣ, ਤੇ, ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ।
      (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦੰਮ-ਬ-ਦੰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ, (ਤਾਂ ਜੁ) ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਏ।
      ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਨਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ (ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਮੰਗ।
      (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ, (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ।
      ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਲੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰ।1।

Now coming to doing Paaths, one can recite any number of Paaths but the main requirement is to make one’s life/deeds spotless/unsullied (ਨਿਰਮਲ) with the help of teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.

To support this, the undersigned wants to say that when first Guru Person Guru Nanak Sahib went to Middle East during one of his Udasis (ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਫੇਰੀਆਂ), he was asked a question by religious persons ( ਕਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ/ਮੁਲਾਂ) that he should open the book, he was carrying, and tell them that between Hindus and Muslims, who was more important in the eyes of God. Guru Nanak Sahib’s reply was that without good deeds both will come to grief. Bhai Gurdas ji has written:-

Further, Fifth Guru Person Guru Arjan Sahib has written in Sukhmani Sahib:-

Please see the two Shabads and their meanings given below in which Guru Sahib has listed all kind of rituals, dogmas, karamkands and advised that by indulging in the same, nothing will be achieved. The only way, which is important is to change one’s life, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, get rid of vices, become a righteous/virtuous person (ਸਚਿਆਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ), become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other and reach the stage of spiritual equipoise (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and spiritual bliss (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ) and finally achieve spiritual emancipation/salvation in this life itself (ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ), because Gurbani doesn’t believe in salvation after death.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother

In my view, the most important is to comprehend the message of Gurbani and to make it a part of your life as Gurbani has transformative power. The repetition is required as a constant reminder to the mind till the message becomes a part of one’s character.
