Why is it necessary to have Amrit?

You have asked a question as to why is it necessary to have Amrit? Further you have said that you have read so many answers but didn’t find any right answer. Please help.

In reply to your question, the undersigned wants to say that let us first of all come to the question, what is Amrit?

Amrit is Ambrosia/Nectar/Elixir of life, by taking which a person never dies and becomes immortal. Immortality is generally linked with physical death, which as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib has to happen. The Guru teaches us that ‘ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ।। means ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।।’The Guru, however, teaches us to rise above the fright of physical death.

Please be kind to read the following stanza from a Shabad of Kabir ji at Panna 654 of Guru Granth Sahib in which he is guiding us to rise above the fright of death:-

ਪਰਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਜਗ ਊਪਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 654}
ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਰਮੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ) । ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਆਖ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।੪।੩।

The Sikh, who is a student, by imbibing the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, has to rise above the fright of death and become Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Perhaps, you would be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word, which means King’s own land.

Once the Sikh become Akalpurakh’s own then Akalpurakh will always be with him and he will not do anything which will lead to his Spiritual Death. In a way, the Sikh has to live a disciplined life, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib. So, as understood by the undersigned, as per the Gurbani this is what immortality is. This is what the Sahibzadas and other martyrs achieved and became immortal for all times to come (ਅਮਰ‌ ਹੋ ਗਏ).

The word Amrit appears in Guru Granth Sahib a large number of times. The undersigned is just giving five examples, which make it absolutely clear that Shabad/Naam (Gurbani) is Amrit. Guru Sahib guides us;-

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥੪੧॥੯੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 393}
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਣ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਹੀਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਥੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।2। 41। 92।

Actually, what we take is not Amrit but ‘Pahul’, which in common parlance is named as ‘Amrit’ and the ceremony is named as ‘Amrit Sanskar’. Now coming to the question why it is necessary to take Pahul?

The practice of giving Pahul was started by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib on the Vaisakhi day of 1699 to prepare a disciplined force of ‘Sant Sipahis (ਸੰਤ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ)’, so as to fight against all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty.This disciplined force of Sant Sipahis came to be known as Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own, who rose above the fright of death and fought all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty in the past and continue to fight presently also, which you might have observed in the very near Farmers Andolan. Therefore, it is upto the Sikh to take Pahul and become a Sant Sipahi or not.

ਅਰਥ: ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਲੱਭ ਪਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪੀਤਾ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।4।13। 46।

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਹਰੀ। ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ) , (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਣਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਈਰਖਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ) ਸੜਨ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।1।

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ-ਦਾਤੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।8।15।16।

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ (ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸੁਭਾਗਤਾ) ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ) ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ) ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਨਾਮ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ; ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਪੀਤਾ ਹੈ।1।

ਅਰਥ: (ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ਪਪੀਹਾ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਮਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਖਾ ਜਾਏ, ਪਪੀਹਾ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਪਪੀਹਾ (-ਜੀਵ) ਪਸ਼ੂ (-ਸੁਭਾਉ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ (ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਐਸਾ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ) ਪੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।1।
