No. It is not necessary to beat Nagara.
Nagara is a unique drum associated with Sikh History as Sikhs used to drum this at Anandpur Sahib. Hindu Pahari Rajas were jealous of Sikhs beating the drum. For them, common men/women should not have been beating Nagara, as it represents sovereignty. Most of the Sikhs were from so-called low castes.
Just to keep our rich tradition alive, it is good to have Nagaras at Gurdwara. Many Gurdwaras beat Nagara at the end of Ardas. Usually, children at Gurdwara take control of it and enjoy beating the Nagara. Elders should explain to our children the history of the battles fought by brave Sikhs on the foothills of Shivalik against caste-arrogant Pahari Rulers.
