Why Do So Many Sikhs Drink?

Aman Arora
Aman Arora

Why do so many of us drink? Even big names like jathedars, gianis, and raagis have been caught. It’s become deep in Punjabi culture — not just Jatts, but many Punjabis, even Sikhs in general. Now people think Sikhs are heavy drinkers. At parties, weddings, unis, even Sikh societies — alcohol is expected.

But Guru Ji said no. Rehat Maryada says no. It’s a kurehit. Still, if a Sikh says they don’t drink, people call them Muslim or not a “real” Sikh. That’s so wrong.

Alcohol harms your body — liver, brain, kidneys. Science doesn’t really say it’s good. I’ve seen it ruin lives, families, education. Even smart, educated Sikhs drink a lot.

Why has it become like this? Can we stop it? Can we speak up and change this?

      Dear Aman ji,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      In response to your question about drinking of wine by Sikhs, the undersigned wants to say that Guru Granth Sahib completely prohibits drinking of wine, as you may please see from the Salok by the Third Guru Person, Guru Amardas Sahib and its meanings:-

      ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਮਾਣਸੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਆਣਿਆ ਮਾਣਸੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਆਇ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਰਲੁ ਪਵੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇ ॥ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਧਕੇ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਜਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ ਝੂਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਪੀਚਈ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਮਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 554}
      ਅਰਥ: ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਲਿਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਏਥੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹ ਏਥੇ ਆ ਕੇ (ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਲਿੱਬੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਆਦਿਕ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) , ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੀਤਿਆਂ ਅਕਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬਕਣ ਦਾ ਜੋਸ਼ ਆ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਾਏ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਮਾਲਕ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਧੱਕੇ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੀਤਿਆਂ ਖਸਮ ਵਿਸਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਐਸਾ ਚੰਦਰਾ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ, ਜਿਥੋਂ ਤਕ ਵੱਸ ਚੱਲੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।
      ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ‘ਨਾਮ’-ਰੂਪ ਨਸ਼ਾ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦੇ) ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਥਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਇੱਜ਼ਤ) ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।੧।

      But the problem is that majority of the Sikhs don’t live their lives, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, with the result that the disease of drinking wine, by the Sikhs, instead of reducing, is increasing day by day.

      The religious authorities of the Sikhs need to first adhere to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib themselves and then the common Sikh will also follow suit. Pray that this happens!

      Regards,
      Your Brother

      I personally believe it has more to do with Politics than Religion.

      We have theke (alcohol stores) like every 1 km in Punjab, while we have whole states like Gujrat that are declared Dry(complete ban on alcohol) and now Gujarat is 2nd highest earning state of India.

      Anyway the alcohol then got its space in songs and as I have observed, songs pretty much give direction to younger generation of what a culture is.
