Why do Sikhs say "Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh"?

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh is a salutation, which Sikhs exchange on meeting each other. However, it has very deep meanings.

The word ‘Waheguru’ is a combination of two words:-

‘Wah’ means that Akalpurakh/ Parmatma is worth praising and ‘Guru’ means that Akalpurakh/ Parmatma bestowes knowledge (light) in the darkness of ignorance.

The word ‘Khalsa’ is a Persian word and means ‘King’s’ own land. Keeping this in view, a Sikh has to become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s/Parmatma’s own.

‘Waheguru ji ka Khalsa’ means that the ‘Khalsa’ is inseparable from Akalpurakh/Parmatma. ‘Waheguru ji ki Fateh’ means that the victory is of Akalpurakh/Parmatma. This implies that the victory of Khalsa of Akalpurakh/Parmatma is also ensured.
