      What ever we demand that need not be fulfilled.
      According to Gurmat Ardas is meant for lowering our ego so that we can understand and follow Gurbani written in Guru Granth Sahib.
      ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੇ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥- 749
      People mostly do Ardas for material demands, which are not acceptable according to Gurmat. He knows what to give and whom to give.
      ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ – 1420
      We start feeling sad for material demands. We need to rectify our deeds. Once we start listening and following Gurbani written in Guru Granth Sahib, then our sorrow feelings will start reducing automatically.

      Thanks for the question.
      Important note- if you feel sad (udaas) for a very long time, say for more than 15 days. This could be due to a medical condition. This could be because of a deficiency of some nutrients (like Vitamin-D) or due to some mental distress. You must immediately consult a good doctor and explain your problem.
      Keep on doing Ardaas and try to develop an interest in Gurbani-Vichaar also. This will strengthen your resolve to come out of sadness.
      ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ॥
      ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਆਇਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਥ ॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 263-264}
      ਦੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਦ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ! ਹੇ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ!
      ਹੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ।

      Gurbani explains to us that everything happening in this universe and in our life is according to Hukam or laws of nature. When we understand the message of Gurbani at a deeper level then we start getting answers to our questions. We start getting the correct outlook towards life and we start treading the correct path that fills our life with high spirits ( Chardi Kala),

      ਜਿਨੑੀ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਰੋਵਣਾ ॥

      Those who recognize the Lord’s Command never weep.
