ਪਹਿਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੀਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਭਾਈ ਮਰਦਾਨਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲ ਲੰਬਾ ਸਾਥ ਰਿਹਾ, ਰਬਾਬ ਵਜਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਸਨ।
