When is Sikhs New year?

ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਯੋਗ ਵੀਰ ਜੀ/ਭੈਣ ਜੀ,

You have asked a question as to when is Sikhs new year?

As understood by the undersigned, Guru Granth Sahib doesn’t give any direction in this regard but the Sikhs, taking a clue from the ‘Baani Baraha Mah’ in Guru Granth Sahib, start the Sikhi year from Desi month Chet and end it at Phagan. Baraha means twelve and Mah means month. In other words, Baraha Mah mean twelve months.

For your kind information, there are two ‘Baraha Maahs’ in Guru Granth Sahib. One is of first Guru Person Guru Nanak Sahib, at Panna 1107-1109, in Tukhari Raag.
The other is of fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjan Sahib, at Panna 133-136 in Majh Raag.

Actually, both the Barah Maahs, using the example of changing seasons, have drawn the picture of changes taking place in human mind and have given guidance for remaining spiritually stable. In essence the Baani has nothing to do with the start and end of a year. This is Sikh’s own creation.

While concluding both the Barah Maahs, the Guru Sahib tells us that for those persons, who become spiritually stable, all days, months, seasons etc. are pious and they don’t carry any erroneous belief (Superstition) that some months or days like Sangrand (ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ), Moonless day (ਮੱਸਿਆ), (Full Moon day (ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ) etc. are more pious.

ਬੇ ਦਸ ਮਾਹ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ ਭਲੇ ॥ ਘੜੀ ਮੂਰਤ ਪਲ ਸਾਚੇ ਆਏ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੇ ॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1109}
ਅਰਥ: ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋਏ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਹੀਨੇ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਥਿੱਤਾਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਦਿਨ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਘੜੀਆਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਮੁਹੂਰਤ ਤੇ ਪਲ ਸੁਲੱਖਣੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਂਦ ਮੱਸਿਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ-ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ।

ਮਾਹ ਦਿਵਸ ਮੂਰਤ ਭਲੇ ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਰਸ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੪॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 136}
ਅਰਥ: ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਮੁਹੂਰਤ ਸੁਲੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ (ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਂਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਭਰਮ-ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ) । ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਂ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ) ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ।14।
