What is the technical (physical) distinction between a knife and a Kirpan?

The knife is usually small and straight. Very much Sharp from one side and corner.
Whereas Kirpan is curved long and thicker. But not as sharp as knife.
Knife is usually used for cutting vegetables.
However Kirpan is used for defence.
