There is no such restriction in the Bani enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib ji.
Yes, as per Sikh Community tradition, It is necessary. It started out to be a Last name but them some Sikhs, trying to distinguish one from the other with same name started to add name of their village as the last name. And then some other started to use their subcaste as their last name.
However please note: As per Sikhi, there is complete equality among Sikhs regardless if the use Singh as their last name, Singh as their middle name and name of their village as last name, or Singh as their middle name and subcaste as their last name.
Same holds true for the name Kaur for girls.
A little background.
It is said that Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in an effort the to implement equality of the castes gave every Sikh a last name of Singh replacing whatever their case may have been before taking Khalsa brotherhood.
By the way, please note that the sub-cast “Singh” already existed among the Rajputs of that time and still does. So, there might be some need for additional fact findings.
About the Kaur, same is said to be true. The Kaur mean Princess. So, every Sikh daughter is a Princes.
However, it is difficult to explain the why daughters are given a last name (cast) different from their father’s as at that time the off-springs took the last name (cast) of their father. Once again there is need to for additional fact finding.
Hope this helps.
