The Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, passed unanimously by the Punjab Assembly on April 13, 2026, mandates life imprisonment and fines up to ₹25 lakh for the desecration (beadbi) of the Guru Granth Sahib. Signed by the Governor by April 19, 2026, it aims to prevent sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
The bill is officially intended as a deterrent against acts of beadbi and to provide a strong legal mechanism for upholding the sanctity of the holy scripture Guru Granth Sahib.
Concerns have been raised about the need for clearer definition of “desecration” and of potential misuse. It is too early to say anything and only time will tell as to what will happen.
