Khalsa, an initiated Sikh, is reuired to carry a swrod as part of the Khalsa dress code.
Normally grooms, not just Sikhs, in India, carried a sword for their and bride’s protection.
In old times, the BARATS taking a bride home, from her parental home, was open to being robbed by robbers and theives. So, most BARATI carried some defensive weapons (even a lathi) and the groom being the main person to be robbed is always equipped with a Sword.
Sikhs have kept the tradition, and others are slowly dropping it.
We need to drop this outdated redundant tradition. Carrying any weapon, especially in the presence of Gurbani Granth Sahib, the ultimate guide and protector of humanity, does not augur well.
