Ashwani Sharma ji, your question is self contradictory. You write “Should one do simran (meditation) or is it better to do both simran and meditation together?”. My dear, you yourself are saying that simran and meditation are one and the same and that is true.
Simran or meditation in SIKHI mean reading, listening GURBANI, understanding the message, internalizing and living the message in daily life.
By remembering, chanting, listening, and reading Gurbani (Naam) we will remain healthy both mentally and physically. GGS-611) sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat’h, Fifth Mehl:
kar isnaan simar parabh apnaa man tan bha-ay arogaa.
After taking your cleansing bath, remember your God in meditation, and your mind and body shall be free of disease.
kot bighan laathay parabh sarnaa pargatay bhalay sanjogaa. ||1||
Millions of obstacles are removed, in the Sanctuary of God, and good fortune dawns. ||1||

The Word of God’s Bani, and His Shabad, are the best utterances.

Few definitions as per Gurmat –
Naam – any word (Shabad), line (Tuk), i.e. all Bani in Sri Guru Granth Saheb (SGGS) is Naam.
Naam Japna (reciting Naam) – self-listening of loud self-chanted Naam. It can be individually or congressional (Sangat).
Naam Japna is a remedy for our mental as well as physical disorders.
Naam Simran (remembering Naam) –
quite individual reading and remembering Gurbani by understanding meaning and central idea.
Naam Dhyan (focussing on Naam or meditation in Gurmat) –
On the touch stone of Gurbani, with a mission to unite with Akal Purakh for making my life journey blissful, my introspection to diagnose the vices to be got rid of by me, the godly virtues to be assimilated by me, strategies to be adopted by me, and planning of efforts to be made by me in everyday life to accomplish that mission, is Naam Dhyan.
