      Respected Haraj ji,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      In reply to your question, about taking Sikh vows,
      please be kind to read the following Pangti of Shabad of Fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjun Sahib, in Raag Maru, which is located at Panna 1083-84 of Guru Granth Sahib:-

      ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1084}

      ਪਦ ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ = (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕੱਟਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖਣਾ। ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਦਸਤਾਰ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ) , ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ।12।
      ਅਰਥ: (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕਟਾਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖ = ਇਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।12।

      In this Guru Sahib is teaching that one is not to disturb the appearance (ਸਰੂਪ) given by Akalpurakh. Rather, keeping it as it is a way to get respect. Therefore, one has to first get convinced about remaining in Akalpurakh’s Hukam and maintaining the Sikhi Saroop. This is what you can call first vow.

      Next, coming to the second vow, Fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjun Sahib, is teaching us in 8th Pauri of 23rd Ashatpadi of Sukhmani Sahib the way to become Jeevan Mukat (Achieve emancipation/salvation in this life itself):-

      ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਧਨਵੰਤੁ ਕੁਲਵੰਤੁ ਪਤਿਵੰਤੁ ॥ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਭਗਵੰਤੁ ॥ ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਜਨ ਆਵਨ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 294-295}

      ਅਰਥ: ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
      ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
      ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ।
      ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
      ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਐਸੇ (ਉੱਤਮ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਡੀ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਹੈ।8। 23।

      Guru Sahib is teaching us that a person, who becomes one with Him not only prospers but becomes respectable as well and achieves emancipation/salvation in this life itself. He, however, doesn’t get stuck in worldly riches (prosperity) and in his company, other persons also achieve higher stage of spirituality. Guru Sahib salutes such a person.

      Now we come to the question about taking Amrit?

      ‘Amrit’ i.e. Ambrosia/Nectar/Elixir of life, is generally linked with physical death and l it is taken to mean that by taking Amrit, a person never dies and becomes immortal.

      Please be kind to read the following stanza from a Shabad of Kabir ji at Panna 654 of Guru Granth Sahib in which he is guiding one to rise above the fright of death:-

      ਪਰਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਜਗ ਊਪਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 654}

      ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਰਮੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ) । ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਆਖ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।੪।੩।

      However, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib the physical death has to happen. The Guru teaches us that ‘ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ।। means ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।।’ The Guru, however, teaches us to rise above the fright of physical death and never die a spiritual death. This is what the Sahibzadas, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and many other Sikhs, who laid down their lives, achieved and became immortal (ਅਮਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ).

      The word Amrit appears in Guru Granth Sahib a large number of times, which makes it absolutely clear that Shabad/Naam (Gurbani) is Amrit. For example, Guru Sahib guides us;-

      ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥੪੧॥੯੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 393}
      ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਣ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਹੀਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਥੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।2। 41। 92।

      Therefore, the Sikh, who is a student and seeker of truth, by imbibing the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, has to rise above the fright of physical death and become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own and never die a spiritual death. Perhaps, you would be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word, which means King’s own land.

      Once the Sikh become Akalpurakh’s own then Akalpurakh will always be with him and he will not do anything which will lead to his spiritual death. In a way, the Sikh has to live a disciplined life, as per the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, get rid of vices, become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are embodiment of each other and reach the stage of spiritual equipoise (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and spiritual bliss (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ) so as to achieve the goal of salvation/emancipation in this life itself (ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ).

      Now we come to the ceremony of ‘Amrit Sanskar,’ as per ‘Rehat Maryada (Code of Conduct), laid down by Akal Takhat Sahib?

      Actually, what we take from Panj Piaras is not Amrit but ‘Pahul’, which in common parlance is named as ‘Amrit’ and the ceremony is named as ‘Amrit Sanskar’. Please see pages 27 to 31 of ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’, under the heading ‘Amrit Sanskar’, which are devoted to the ceremony of taking Pahul. Please click on the link below to read the ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’:-

      Now coming to the question why it is necessary to take Pahul?

      The practice of giving Pahul was started by Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, on the Vaisakhi day of 1699 to prepare a disciplined force of ‘Sant Sipahis (ਸੰਤ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ)’, so as to fight against all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty.This disciplined force of Sant Sipahis came to be known as Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own, who rose above the fright of death and fought all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty in the past and continue to do so.

      Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If there are any shortcomings please do point out the same for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother
