If a Sikh is born in a lower caste in the next life as a result of bad deeds, how can he serve the name of waheguru?

In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that the Gurbani doesn’t subscribe to the theory of caste system, which is prevalent in Hinduism, because the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib are for all. The Guru teaches us:-

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸੂਦ ਵੈਸ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਝਾ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਉਧਰੈ ਸੋ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਝਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੫੦॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 747}

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਵੈਸ਼ ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਵਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੩।੫੦।

Moreover, the Gurbani doesn’t believe in the theory of reincarnation. Reincarnation (ਪੁਨਰਜਨਮ), after death, is not a Sikhi concept but is of Hinduism. In Sikhism, the mind (ਮਨ) gets into the cycle of reincarnation, when it gets stuck into the material world. To make it clear the undersigned is just quoting two Pangtis of a Shabad of Bhagat Namdev ji at Panna 693 of Guru Granth Sahib:-

ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਛੂਟਉ ਜਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਹ ਲਪਟਾਵਉ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਕਾ ਤਿਹ ਤਜਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੩॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 693)

ਅਰਥ: ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਫਸਾਂ; ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਣ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।

Further, Bhagat Kabir ji guides us:-

ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਤੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਅਪਬਾਦੁ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ॥ ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਹੋਤੁ ਹੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਪਰਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥੨॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 970) ਅਰਥਾਤ (ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ!) ਪਰਾਏ ਧਨ (ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ), ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦੀ ਕਾਮਨਾ), ਪਰਾਈ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਰੋਧ = ਇਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ– ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਪਰ ਮਨ, ਪਰ ਤਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਲੰਮਾ ਝੇੜਾ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।2।

Sikhism subscribes to the theory of spiritual emancipation/ salvation in this life itself (ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ), as you would observe from just one example given below. The Fifth Guru Person Guru Arjan Sahib is guiding us in 8th Pauri of 23rd Ashatpadi of Sukhmani Sahib that one who becomes one with Akalpurakh while living, becomes Jeevan Mukat (Achieves emancipation/salvation in this life itself):-

ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਧਨਵੰਤੁ ਕੁਲਵੰਤੁ ਪਤਿਵੰਤੁ ॥ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਭਗਵੰਤੁ ॥ ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਜਨ ਆਵਨ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 294-295}

ਅਰਥ: ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਐਸੇ (ਉੱਤਮ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਡੀ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਹੈ।8। 23।

Further, the undersigned wants to draw your attention to the following Stanza of a Shabad of Fourth Guru Person, Guru Ramdas Sahib, in which he is guiding us that Akalpurakh is all pervasive i.e. everywhere in water, earth and every living being:-

ਹਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਲਿ ਥਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਥਾਨ ਥਾਨੰਤਰਿ ਬਸਤਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੋ ਚਾਓੁ ॥ ਕੋਈ ਆਵੈ ਸੰਤੋ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੰਤੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜਨੁ ਸੰਤੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਿਖਲਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੋਵਾ ਪਾਓੁ ॥੧॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1201)

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਮਿਲੇ, ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤ ਆ ਮਿਲੇ, ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਮਿਲੇ, ਤੇ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ) ਰਾਹ ਵਿਖਾ ਜਾਏ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਾਂ।1।

Therefore, you can very well see from the above teachings of Guru Granth Sahib that Akalpurakh lives in every living being, as what we call ‘Atma’ and with the strength given by Him, the body functions. As soon as the strength is withdrawn, the physical death takes place and the five elements of which the body is composed of, merge with the five elements and the Atma merges with Akalpurakh. Thus, nothing is left. No one knows as to what happens to the Atma after that.

As regards the bad deeds, one reaps what one sows because the Guru teaches us ‘ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ’ ਅਰਥਾਤ ‘ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਬੀਜੇਂਗਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖਾਹਿਂਗਾ’।

Further, the Guru teaches us ‘ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਕਰਮਾ ਸੰਦੜਾ ਖੇਤੁ।।’ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਖੇਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਵੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Therefore, one comes in this life with a clean slate and one doesn’t carry anything further. Hence, one has to take care in this life itself because Gurbani teaches to live in the present without bothering about past or future:-

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੁਰੀਆ ॥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਰੀਆ ॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 12}

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਇਹੀ ਮੌਕਾ ਹੈ।
