The one I read is by Prof. Sahib singh.
For you, I recommend the History of Sikhs by Khushwant Singh.
For Children, There is one set of books by Professor Gurbaksh Singh Gill, USA.
After reading a number of books on Guru Sahibs with SAKHIAN, I came to the conclusion that most of them do not pass the test of being consistent with Gurbani message. And I do not accept that Guru Sahib did not practice what they preached.
Most books on the life of Guru Sahibs (SAKHIAN), including a new SAKHI told by BHAI SAHIBS at Gurduaras, have a lot of MANMAT included in them. Quite often, they are told as if someone was writing as the Guru Sahibs interacted with the individuals.
Only take what is consistent with Gurbani and discard all that contradicts Gurbani.
