GUR KEE HAR TEK TIKAE has been literally interpreted , hold tight to the support of the GURU. GURU is SHABAD, WISDOM, GODLY VIRTUES. It mean contemplate, meditate, understand, internalize and live the teachings of GURU in your daily life. AWAR ASA SABH LAHE, literal, give up all other hopes. Does that mean we stop living, not hope for better job, success in business. It means we become contented (SANTOKHI) , craving for more , more is no more, happy with what we have.
Respected Sukhpreet Kaur Ji;
I agree with the response given earlier.
If I may add:
Part of making the SABD Guru one’s base (ADHAAR) includes the message:
ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇਦਿਆ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਕਮਾਵਦਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਭੁੰਚੁ ॥ (SGGS, P:522)
Take the initiative in your life, and enjoy the fruits of your earnings (hard work).
So the verse does include taking the initiative, working hard and enjoying (being happy/satisfied) with the rewards one receives.
