      Respected Brother/Sister,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that the Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, created the Khalsa in 1699. The Khalsa is a community of initiated Sikhs. The Sikh Gurus envisioned a society where all people were equal – regardless of gender, caste, religion, or any other social marker that creates divisions between the people.

One of the main divisions in Indian society at that time was caste. The surname used to be identified with the caste background of the people. In an effort to erase the marker of caste in the Sikh community, Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, called for all Sikh women to keep the surname Kaur and Sikh men the surname Singh. Therefore, not only Punjabi Sikhs but all Sikh men are required to keep surname ‘Singh’.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards ,
      Your Brother
