NEW MOTHER/BIRTH/40 DAYS

Anonymous
Anonymous

I’m a new mother.
my mother in law said I can’t go out for 40 days.
I personally don’t believe in such rules.
What is the significance of 40 days after birth.
I respect my mother in law.
But what do our scriptures say about this?
I’m feeling so confused.

Respected Bhain Ji, you have asked a very good and relevant question. The answers given by Veer ji and Bhain ji above are very clear but in earlier times when a child was born, it was considered not to go to that house, as it was considered unclean and unholy for 13 days. Some people even considered it more than others. And even today this illusion lives on in many of our people in one form or another. But Dhan Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji has explained this very clearly
Or Asa Ki Vaar is also very clear. Don’t have any superstitious illusions about anything. Everything that is happening is happening under the Hukam of Akal Purakh. The rest of the cleanliness and comfort is different. The rest, if you want to understand more clearly, then there is a small book of Rehat Maryada which is published by SGPC. Open the birth rites (Janam sanskaar) in it and read it.

As far as I know it is a cultural norm, nothing to do with Sikhism. In good old days when women were always busy doing chores in and out of the house, this was a good time to give them rest and recuperate after child birth.

I do not think anything is written about this matter in SGGS Ji. Scientifically it is good for a new Mom to avoid going out for some time as the immune system of the newborn is still developing and it is better for the new Mom to prevent herself from getting exposed to foreign invaders/ germs.

There is no such condition mentioned in Gurbani. All these restrictions are depending upon the requirements and situation. Olden days much medical facilities were not available, hence people used to follow this rule of 40 days.
Even different hospitals discharge after different days depending upon health and other requirements.
Purpose is the health and safety of the child and mother.

Both before birth and after birth, the Hukam of Akal Purkh i.e laws are nature are going to operate.
Hence, we need to understand His Hukam applicable at physical and mental level for the health and safety of the child and mother.
