Why do some Sikhs oppose idol worship despite their belief in God’s presence in all beings, and the recognition of certain Bhagats (such as Namdev Ji and Dhanna Ji) finding God within idols mentioned in Gurbani?

      Respected Brother/Sister,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      In response to your question, the undersigned is quoting two Pangtis from Guru Granth Sahib, which make it absolutely clear that Guru ka Shabad is Guru ki Moorti (Idol) in Sikhism and there is no place for worship of images and statues in Sikhism:-

      ਗੋਂਡ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਧਾਰਉ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਉ ॥੧॥

      ਪਦਅਰਥ: ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ = ਰੂਪ ਮੂਰਤੀ। ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ = ਰੂਪ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ। ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ = ਨਾਮ = ਮੰਤ੍ਰ। ਮਾਨ = ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰਿਦੈ = ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਲੈ = ਲੈ ਕੇ। ਧਾਰਉ = ਧਾਰਉਂ, ਮੈਂ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧।

      Now coming to Bhagat Namdev ji. Please read the following stanza from his Shabad at Panna 525 of Guru Granth Sahib:+

      ਏਕੈ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀਜੈ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਾਥਰ ਧਰੀਐ ਪਾਉ ॥ ਜੇ ਓਹੁ ਦੇਉ ਤ ਓਹੁ ਭੀ ਦੇਵਾ ॥ ਕਹਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੪॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 525}

      ਅਰਥ: (ਕਿਆ ਅਜਬ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਇਕ ਪੱਥਰ (ਨੂੰ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਧਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਉਹ ਪੱਥਰ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਦੇਵਤਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਦੂਜਾ ਪੱਥਰ ਭੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਲਤਾੜੀਦਾ ਹੈ? ਪਰ) ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਸੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਥਾਪ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ) , ਅਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।੪।੧।

      In this stanza Bhagat ji is guiding that you make one stone as your deity and love him whereas on another stone you put your feet. If that stone is a deity then this stone is also a deity. Finally, he is concluding that he is not ready to worship any stone deity, rather he worships Parmatma.

      Now please read just one Pangti from a Shabad of Bhagat Dhanna ji, located at Panna 487 of Guru Granth Sahib in which Bhagat ji is saying that he is conveying that he has been able to find real Prabhu in Gurbani and merged with him-

      ਧੰਨੈ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਧਰਣੀਧਰੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 487}

      ਅਰਥ: ਮੈਂ ਧੰਨੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਧਨ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ; ਮੈਂ ਧੰਨਾ ਭੀ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।4।1।

      Therefore, you can very well see that your statement that Bhagat Namdev ji or Bhagat Dhanna ji were votary of idol worship. Further, for Sikhs, Gurbani itself is Guru’s idol and he is to take knowledge from teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.

      This is the reason that there is no place for treating stone idols as deities and worshipping the same.

      Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother
