You can see that the term ‘Nitnem’
describes the daily Paath, which one is expected to do.
The Sikh, however, has to live his life as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and, instead of getting into arguments, is expected to look within all the time, as taught by Guru Granth Sahib in the Tuk below:-
ਬੰਦੇ ਖੋਜੁ ਦਿਲ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ ਨਾ ਫਿਰੁ ਪਰੇਸਾਨੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਇਹ ਜੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਿਹਰੁ ਮੇਲਾ ਦਸਤਗੀਰੀ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ) ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਖੋਜ, (ਬਹਿਸ ਮੁਬਾਹਸੇ ਦੀ) ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਭਟਕ। ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਇਕ ਜਾਦੂ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਵਾਦ-ਵਿਵਾਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਹੱਥ-ਪੱਲੇ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੈ ਨਹੀਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Sikh is expected to get rid of vices, become a righteous/ virtuous person (Gurmukh) and remain one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru , who are spiritually embodiment of each other, and reach the stage of spiritual equipoise and spiritual bliss. The final goal is to achieve spiritual emancipation/salvation in this life itself because in Sikhism there is no concept of emancipation/ salvation after death.

What is NIT NEM in Sikhi.
WHAT NIT NEM.?
One member of this group posted that with break in her NIT NEM she feels guilty and stressed out. Wow that made me think. Did GURUS give us NIT NEM, doing that gives stress. Gurbani is for spiritual enlightenment, inner- peace and bliss. NIT NEM is defined in MAHAN KOSH as a prescribed religious task to be performed every day. Truth is that GURUS did not give us NIT NEM that to be repeated every day. NIT NEM listed in SIKH REHAT MARYADA was prescribed by group of SIKHS in 1948. There are so many issues raised by progressive Sikh scholars on this NIT NEM, those needs reform. GURU says MOORAKH PAREH SHABD NA BOOJHAI GURMUKH WIRLAI JATA HE, meaning reading and repeating GURBANI without understanding the spiritual message, what it means in my daily life has no meaning. To be very blunt I do not perform NIT NEM as prescribed. I consider this to be a ritual. I do meditate, contemplate on GURBANI every day, listen to SHBAD discourses by progressive Sikh scholars and try living every word of it in my everyday life. I experience inner peace, happiness, bliss 24×7. There are so many verses in the text of SGGSJI pointing to the fact that just reading and repeating GURBANI does not make you good human being.
According to my understanding, we need to connect with Almighty Waheguru every day, get divine wisdom every day, and lead our lives according to this wisdom. This is Nitnem according to my understanding.
