There is nothing pure vegetarian. Every grain have living organisms in them according to Gurmat as well as Science.
There is no restriction of any type of food, provided it is good for your health and does not cause any harm to the body. Please study the following Shabad in detail for further clarification.
The choice of selecting the meat is same as for any other vegetable. One has to see whether it is fresh and suitable to eat for the body. All these confusions have been taken from other religions. Eating of meat has nothing to do with the religion. Purpose is to become Sachyaar and not ritual Path or Pooja. There is no question of being vegetarian or non vegetarian. Gurmat does not put any such restrictions. Hence, all the Guru Sahibs might be eating both type of food, without any confusion or restrictions. Please go through the following article for details.
The Shabad quoted by you have been discussed in the following article along with other Shabad

It is important to understand that compassion is the core value of Sikh teaching. Thus at several other places in Gurbani it is mentioned that consuming meat is against the advise.
Nonetheless, it is taken out of the debate of Paan or Punya because in situations where the alternative choice is not available, it may be consumed to save the life. In human evolution history, taking meat was the only choice. Animals also depend upon the flesh of other animals for their survival. But now we have a choice and we should obey Guru’s advise.
In this shabad, Kabir criticizes people who indulge in intoxicating and pleasure-driven habits and then rely on pilgrimages, fasts, and religious vows to justify or cleanse themselves.
The mention of bhang, fish, and alcohol is not meant to establish dietary rules but to represent states of indulgence and loss of awareness. When read in its full context, the shabad rejects the idea that outward religious practices can compensate for inner negligence, addiction, or ego.
It aligns with the broader teaching of the Guru Granth Sahib that spiritual clarity does not come from controlling food but from preserving awareness, honesty, and inner discipline. The focus is not on what is eaten, but on how consciously one lives.
