      Yes, the most important thing is to absorb the message of Gurbani, and it should become a part of the personality.

      In response to your question, the undersigned wants to bring to your kind notice that Guru Sahib teaches us that a person, who listens and sings Gurbani will not experience any distress:

      ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 190) ਅਰਥਾਤ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕੋਈ) ਦੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦਾ।2।

      Further, Guru Sahib behoves every Sikh/person to become righteous/virtuous (Gurmukh) i.e. Gurbani himself. In other words, the Sikh/person is being advised to become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other:

      ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਬਣੀਐ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 304) ਅਰਥਾਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ) ਬਣ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਜੋ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।

      Like Ramneet Ji said, important thing is to understand and apply the message and teachings to your daily life.

      However some people can focus better on words/meanings when they read themselves.
