Why do we give money to the Kirtan jathe?
I agree with the above answer;
There is no direct reference in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bani about placing money directly in front to the Ragi Jatha. Though there is a historical reference about Ragi Jatha of Satta and Balwand, being paid from the Guru’s treasures.
Please also note: For most Ragi Jathas, this is a Profession, they make money any which way they can. This is no different than singer and other entertainers making money from the audience by audience showering money on the stage.
By the way, This is also a good way for Management to pay them less from Gurduara fund and encourage direct payment to Ragi Jatha. Most people will not place as much in front of Guru Granth Sahib, but they will give more directly to the Ragi Jatha. There may be a bit of ego satisfaction / Show off in the process.
Probably to show your appreciation about their enthralling performance.
Since this is their profession in most cases and they are already being paid by the Gurdwara management, who who pay them reasonably good or at times hefty sums ranging from $500 to 1000 for their one hour performance. Incidentally, this fee is paid out of your regular donations at the Gurdwaras.
Some devotees also try to show off their benevolence of the offerings they dish out, which is not good in a holy environment of the shrine, and should be discouraged.
