Right – so i feel a little disheartened here. My mum goes pretty much every day to the Gurdwara. She does paath.
But she asked me if i will be doing Karva Chauth!!!! I have never done it. And neither has mum. 6 years into my marriage she suggests this???
She is also aware i am very firm on these things – i do not follow them. I am aware many Sikh ladies do it, including one or two of my cousins. I respect all religions/cultures but to me this is not the Sikhi way.
When i challenged mum and said im not Hindu….. she snapped at me saying Sikhs follow it too. Clearly shes not accurate. I reminded her the guru granth sahib teaches otherwise.
I actually feel sad why my mum said this? And why she even suggesting this? And then i see how many Sikh ladies celebrate it!!! This is a huge thing both im India and abroad.
I have somewhat knowledge around Sikhi and i can and will challenge people on this. But many young girls arent and will follow what “mummy” and mother in law suggest!
Will we ever move away from this?

Your thinking is on the right track.
Follow your heart.
sometimes we have to respectfully listen and decline what our elders say.
This is not a festival for Sikh women.
stand your ground and only follow teachings of our Gurus.
