      Respected Brother/Sister,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      In reply to your question, the undersigned wants to say that the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib had made it very clear, in his discussion with Yogis, that his Guru was Shabad when he said Shabad Guru Surat Dhun Chela (ਸਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ).

      The Guru Granth Sahib starts with Jap Baani of First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, and the Baani starts with, what is called Mool Mantar, which defines the attributes of the One God (Akalpurakh), with whom a person can become one, with the help of Shabad Guru:-

      ੴ (Ik Onkar) (One Universal Creator God);
      ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ (Sat Naam) (The Name Is Truth);
      ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ (Karta Purakh) (Creative Being Personified);
      ਨਿਰਭਉ (Nirbhau) (No Fear);
      ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ (Nirvair) (No Enmity or Hatred),
      ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ (Akal Moorat) (Image of the undying);
      ਅਜੂਨੀ (Ajuni) (Beyond Birth);
      ਸੈਭੰ (Saibhang) (Self-existstant);
      ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ (Gur Parsad) (By Guru’s Grace).

      Therefore, the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, himself had made it very clear, in the very beginning of the Guru Granth Sahib, that there is one creator God and He is not in human form but resides everywhere and in every living being.

      Therefore, Shabad was the Guru of Sikhs from the very beginning. Each of the Guru Persons, who were spiritually one with Akalpurakh, came with a mission from Him, and after fulfillment of the same, were replaced with the next Guru Person.

      In Guru Granth Sahib it is recorded that though the bodies of Guru Persons changed but the Jot (flame or light) remained the same:-

      ਲਹਣੇ ਦੀ ਫੇਰਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੋਹੀ ਖਟੀਐ ॥ ਜੋਤਿ ਓਹਾ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਾਇ ਸਹਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਫੇਰਿ ਪਲਟੀਐ ॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 966} ਅਰਥਾਤ (ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਬਾਬਾ ਲਹਣਾ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੀ ਧੁੰਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ, ਬਾਬਾ ਲਹਣਾ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੀ ਧੁੰਮ ਪੈ ਗਈ; ਕਿਉਂਕਿ, (ਬਾਬਾ ਲਹਣਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਉਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਾਲੀ) ਜੋਤਿ ਸੀ, ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਢੰਗ ਭੀ ਉਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੀ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ) ਨੇ (ਕੇਵਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੀ) ਮੁੜ ਵਟਾਇਆ ਸੀ।

      ਜੋਤ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਹਨ – ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਚਮਕ, ਤੇਜ ਤੇ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਹਨ – ਆਤਮਿਕ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ, ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਤੇ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਢੰਗ।

      ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੂਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੀਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੀਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਜਾਂ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਢੰਗ ਵੀ ਇੱਕ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

      For this reason all were Nanak only.

      Finally, Tenth Guru Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, after completing his mission, closed, the lineage of living Guru Persons, and ordained Guru Granth Sahib as ever living Guru of Sikhs. Therefore, the bodies of Guru Persons, are not considered as God in Sikhism.

      However, as per Gurbani, spiritually, there is no difference between Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, as you may please see from two examples (There are more in Guru Granth Sahib) given below:

      ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਇਹੈ ਜਨਾਈ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 864} ਅਰਥਾਤ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਸੁਰ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਜੋ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸੀ) ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹੇਗਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।੪।੫।੭।

      ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 864) ਅਰਥਾਤ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਰੂਪ ਸਮਝੋ। ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ (ਸਿਰ-ਮੱਥੇ) ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

      Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother
